Integrated work across internal teams and specialist consultants to strengthen governance, alignment and decision-making as the operation moves towards closure.
ENTERPRISE MINE CLOSURE | BHP
Led enterprise-level mine closure strategy, governance, risk and financial provisioning across BHP’s global operations, with closure liabilities of more than US$10 billion. Worked across operations, functions and senior leadership to strengthen closure governance and integrate closure risk into business planning and decision-making.
WINU PROJECT | RIO TINTO
Developed the Mine Closure Plan for the Winu copper-gold project, integrating closure considerations and specialist technical inputs into broader project planning during project development.

Joanne Heyes is a mining engineer and mine closure leader with 30 years’ experience across operations, strategy, governance and mine closure, including more than two decades with BHP.
Jo brings a whole-of-business perspective to closure, connecting technical work with risk, cost, governance and executive decision-making. Her approach is curious, direct and pragmatic, with a focus on asking the right questions, challenging assumptions and getting to the heart of complex issues.
